hernias Flashcards
what are the 3 main complications of hernias?
Incarceration- hernia becomes irreducible
Obstruction- hernia causes blockage to the passage of stool
Strangulation- blood sup[ply to the hernia is cut off and it becomes ischaemic
what is the prognosis of a femoral hernia?
- the femoral ring has a narrow opening, putting femoral hernias at risk of….
incarceration, obstruction and strangulation
what is the anatomical difference between direct and indirect inguinal hernias?
direct hernia exits the inguinal canal through the superficial inguinal ring- caused by abdominal weakness because of old age
indirect inguinal hernias pass the deep and superficial inguinal rings. it can protrude into the scrotum and can be caused by incomplete closed ring (infants) and old age abdominal weakness
