Spain had taken back the Iberian Peninsula

Spain became a Roman Catholic country

Spain running low on gold and silver because of years of war

Entered the age of exploration- (France & Britain)- to the new world. They believed Spanish imperialism was their right
What did Spain start?
Spain started expanding its power across the Atlantic. It had made posts on the Caribbean islands of Cuba - they wanted raw resources from central and south America to get rich again

In Spain when the Muslims and Jews were pushed out of Spain and was a witness to the Spanish inquisition

the governor gave him some land but this angered Cortes because he wants to be a governor of his own land, not a peasant

What did Cortes become?
Cortes became the Mayor of Santiago since he did not LEAD the expedition, second in command to Governor Velazquez
What happened for 8 years?
For eight years Cortes proved to be intelligent clever and ruthless.
What did Velazquez do?
Velazquez helped him finance an expedition to the Yucatan
What did Cortes do?
Cortes scoured Cuba for experienced soldiers and used loans to buy ships
What did he have in a few months?
In a few months, he had 11 ships, 508 fighting men, 100 sailors, 200 indigenous slaves, and 16 horses
Why did Cortes worry?
Velazquez was worried that Cortes would get all the wealth and glory for his discoveries and not recognize his authority over the new lands Cortes might conquer
When did Cortes leave?
Cortes set sail on Feb 18, 1519
Where did Cortes go?
Avoiding Cuba, he traveled to the island of Cozumel, along the coast of Mexico -what is now Veracruz
