Hermeneutics Final Flashcards

Q

Noahic Covenant
Gen. 6-13-8:19.

A

Noah is the Main character.

The stench of sin got to God and he decided to destroy mankind through a flood.

God sent Noah to build the ark because it was God’s redemptive plan.

Anyone who believed was allowed on the ark. But only Noah, his 3 daughters and his 3 son in-laws went.

After the flood God established a covenant where he promised not to destroy the earth anymore by a flood. But he did promise that he would destroy it by fire.

God still shows his grace and mercy, he told Noah these people I have to retraing because of their wickedness, but I won’t destroy them with a flood.

The symbol of the covenant was a rainbow.

Q

Abrahamic Covenant

A

Promises
1. land
2. descendants
3. blessings of prosperity

These would extend to all the people of the earth.

It is literal and eternal, it is not spiritualized nor allegorized.

It is the key to both Old Testament and New Testament regarding the redemptive plan of God
It is foundational to all of scripture.

Abraham’s name is mentioned even in the New Testament
There is a division between Israel and the church
The symbol was circumcision (males must be circumcised 8 days after their birth)

AKA Unilateral Covenant
When it’s a binding agreement only on one party, the one making the pledge. Between the covenant of Abraham and God, God was making the pledge. Abraham didn’t make the pledge, he just obeyed it.

Summary: has to deal with the
* nation (children of Abraham),
* the land (often known as Palestine)

Q

Mosaic Covenant
Exodus 19:24

A

God established this covenant with the people of Israel on Mt. Sinai after they were liberated from Egypt

They were in slavery for 430 years

God supplied the law meant to govern and shape the people of Israel in the promised land because they were disorderly. They had no discipline, no religious guidance, or experience with God.

God introduced himself by showing his mighty hand with the ten plagues

God did not send the LAW TO PUT THEM UNDER SLAVERY AGAIN, but to govern them to shape them teach them to guide them to give them a road map on how to serve God in order to enter the promised land.

This generation did not enter the promised land because of their disbelief and doubt
The law was not a means of salvation, but to distinguish God’s people from other nations.

To us, the law is legalism to the church. Legalism is to submit people to follow your own beliefs.

It would distinguish the Jewish people from the other groups of people (Exodus 19)

The Levites were the tribe that they had as role models as they remained faithful unto God

God sent the 10 plagues to reveal who He was

Israel is the perfect analogy for the church

This covenant was conditional
Understanding it was foundational in understanding the lessons and curses in the OT.

The exiles of Israel and Judah

Symbol was the ten commandments

With the death of Christ the law as made null and void

Q

New Covenant
Jeremiah 31-33
Luke 22

A

This is language first used in Jeremiah’s promises of rescue and renewal of the exiled people of God taken to Babylon
Prophecy: promises a coming day when God would make a new covenant uniled the one that Israel broke.
This coming day will bring forgiveness of sin, eternal renewal of the heart, intimate knowledge of God
Mathew 14, the night of Jesus’s last supper, the new covenant was demonstrated through communion, the bread represented the body and Jesus says, this is the break that represents my body that is broken that will be beaten and tortured for you, the wine represents the blood that will be shed on calvary for the remission of sins. (this here is the new covenant)
This covenant is an extension of the Abrahamic covenant. God would bless all the families of the earth.
This covenant is made with the nation of Israel and will be in contrast with the mosaic covenant

3 Dispensational views of the new covenant
The church has no part in the new covenant. Believed to be for Israel only
The church has some part in the new covenant. The new covenant will be fulfill with Israel in the end times.
The church has a preliminary part in the covenant

Soteriologically (sp) - The doctrine of salvation

Major Purposes of Epistle

1. That the conditional mosaic covenant has been replaced by the partial institution of the promised New Covenant
2. The new covenant could not be instituted at all until it was made possible through Jesus, the sacrifice of the Messiah
3. The messiah is the son of God Jesus is the only one who could be the Messiah

Covenant of the Land
Palestinian

A

Expansion or extension of Abrahamic covenant (Gen 13)
