Heredity inside the cell Flashcards
Where do organisms get their traits from?
The genes
Where do you find chromosomes in a Eukaryotic cell?
The nucleus
What makes up chromosomes?
Tightly coiled DNA
Explain the difference between a gene and a trait.
A gene is a section of DNA and traits are characteristics. Ex a gene would be found in blood a trait would be someones eye color, height, ect.
What does DNA stand for?
**Be able to spell it too
DNA stands for Decxyribonucleic Acid
Which types of cells have a nucleus?
Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus
Where do prokaryotic cells store DNA?
Prokaryotic cells store DNA in the cytoplasm
Define heredity
Heredity is the passing of characteristics from one generation to another through genes.
Define offspring
Organisms that result from asexual or sexual reproduction
What is a trait?
A characteristic determined by genes
(Exs: wings for birds, eye color, height, hair texture, and so much more)
What is a gene?
A section of DNA that determines what traits the offspring will have.
Define DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)
DNA is found in all living things and it contains genetic information
Define Chromosome
Chromosomes are X shaped structure made of tightly coiled DNA
Define Nucleus
The nucleus is the control center of Eukaryotic cells and where chromosomes are located. Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus. DNA floats in the cytoplasm instead for Prokaryotic cells.
Where are chromosomes and DNA located in a Eukaryotic cell?
The nucleus
