- esp edema that accompanies an exterior condition
- easier to flow if the top and bottom are open
- ** ma huang opens the top so fluids can go down (top vents the air out, open disperse LU so fluids can go down)

* useful for wind-damp painful obstruction and deep-rooted toxic sores without a head (cystic acne) stuck below the surface that is not coming out
