- Fecal-oral transmission (contaminated food or water)
- incubation pd= 2-6 wks
- NEVER causes chronic liver dz!!
- Dx: detection of serum IgM Abs

- Hepadenavirus
- Parenteral, sexual contact, perinatal
- incubation pd: 2-26 wks (mean 8 wks)
- 5-10% have/progress to chronic liver disease
- Dx: detection of HBs Ag or Ab to HBc Ag; PCR for HBV DNA

- Flaviviridae
- Parenteral; intranasal cocaine use is risk factor
- incubation: 4-26 wks (mean=9wks)
- > 80%=chronic liver dz
- Dx: 3rd generation ELISA for Ab detection; PCR for HCV RNA

- Subviral particle in Deltaviridae family
- Parenteral transmission
- incubation: 2-26 wks (mean=8wks)
- 10%=chronic liver dz for confection and 90-100% for superinfection
- Dx: Detection of IgM and IgG Abs; HDV RNA serum; HDAg in liver
