Hepatitis D Flashcards
Hep D can only replicate in the presence of which other sub-type of hepatitis?
HBV - 5% of HBV carriers have HDV co-infection.
What is the aetiology of Hep D?
· Incomplete RNA virus.
· Activated by the presence of HBV so it is unable to replicate on its own.
What is the treatment for Hep D?
· Mainly supportive treatment, Hep D can also be treated with pegylated interferon alpha (for a minimum 48 weeks) and liver transplantation which can be curative.
· Prevention and control of HDV infection requires prevention of HBV transmission through hepatitis B immunization
»_space;> but hepatitis B immunization does not provide protection against HDV for those already HBV infected.
