Heparins Flashcards
1
Q
What is tinzaparin?
A
Low molecular weight heparin.
It is an anticoagulant and anti-thrombotic.
LMWHs are less effective at inactivating factor IIa due to their shorter length compared to unfractionated heparin.
2
Q
Describe LMWH
A
These have a molecular weight of 4000-6000kD.
In comparison to heparin, they produce a more predictable anticoagulation response and are used for venous thromboembolisms in both pregnancy and in hospital stays.
DVT
PE
3
Q
When is unfractionated heparin used?
A
Acute PE Unstable angina Acute peripheral arterial occlusion Severe DVT Thromboprophylaxis in pregnancy, surgery and medicine. It can be easily reversed if necessary Not to be used after severe trauma
4
Q
How is tinzaparin given?
A
Subcutaneous
