Why did Henry VIII go to war with France?
A
- Wanted war glory and prestige.
- Wanted to increase power and status in Europe. (Keep claim to French throne, get respect from the French king, and gain more land.)
- Encouraged by others (nobles, pope, and Catherine of Aragon)

Why did Henry marry Catherine of Aragon?
A
- Maintain good relations with Spain in preparation for war with France.
- Sense of duty.
- Didn’t want to have to pay back her dowry.
- Secure a dynasty and improve his power and popularity.

Why did Henry make Wolsey his chief minister?
A
- He was hardworking, persuasive, intelligent, and good at networking. He had recommendations from the Marquis of Dorset and the deputy of Calais.
- He supported Henry’s plans for war in 1512.
- He had little rivalry. Warham and Fox retired in 1515. Suffolk was disgraced after marrying Henry’s sister. Duke of bucking was executed for reason in 1521.

Why did Henry execute Edmund de la Pole?
A
- He was young and new to the throne so needed to appear strong.
- Richard de la Pole was supporting France. Henry believed the family would always be a threat.
- He was not bound by the treaty of Windsor.

Why did Henry execute Empson and Dudley?
A
- Part of a wider policy of dealing with complaints about his father’s regime. Wanted to be seen as different.
- Wanted to show he was strong and ruthless.
- Wanted a better, more traditional relationship with the nobility.
