Was remote and often inhosbitable in the winter months

Both sides of the border had a reputation for lawlessness - cattle sheep and rustling was common and so was violence

Three marches, each under the jurisdiction of a warden
What problems were faced with the appointment of wardens in Scotland?
Appointing a local noble family ran the risk of the noble exploiting his power at the King’s expense
Appointing someone loyal to the King could mean they have limited ability to influence the conduct to local people
What was difficult about governing the North of England?
Far away from London - difficult to involve in regimes

To enforce control and prevent rebellion

Yes - evidence of this can be shown as it helped to keep the North quiet during the summer rebellions of 1549

Little sign of there being fundamental change to the English Church.
The Church initially seems to have fulfilled the requirements of the bulk of the people to whom it ministered

1530s - when Henry VIII broke with Rome and became the new head of the English Church
How did people support the changes to the Church?
Small number of people undoubtedly welcomed the change, there was no overwhelming support for the changes the break with Rome caused
