Henry VIII - Religion, Ideas and Reform Flashcards
Give 3 types of corruption which took place in the Church
- pluralism (receiving the profits of more than one post)
- simony (the purchase of church office)
- non-residence (receiving the profits of a post but not performing the duties associated with it)
What is anticlericalism?
Opposition to the political and social importance of the clergy
Give an example of monasteries being dissolved before the 1530s
Wolsey dissolved around 20 houses in the 1520s to fund the establishment of Cardinal College in Oxford
Can an argument be made that monasticism had lost its sense of direction/ became unfavourable and why or how?
Yes it can because of the speed and ease with which monasteries were dissolved - large monasteries had become substantial businesses with huge resources (land and buildings)
Was there a substantial move towards Protestantism following Martin Luther’s attack on the Catholic Church in 1517?
No, although some German reformers had influence in London and east coast ports in the 1520s
