What is the Royal Household?
Nobles and servants that provided the king with clothes, food as well as guidance. They played a very important part in the government.
What is the Privy Chamber?
It was a part of the Royal Household and it was made up of the King’s closest noble friends. They looked after his personal needs as well as providing entertainment.
What is ‘Groom of the Stool’?
This person was assigned to take care of the King’s toilet
What is the Royal Almoner?
This person was in charge of giving charity to the poor. Wolsey was given this duty in 1509.
What is ‘Alter Rex’?
It means ‘Second King’ and people referred to Wolsey as this because of his great power.
What is Lord Chancellor?
This was the most important job in the government after the King. This person was also the main adviser to the monarch. Wolsey was given this job in 1515.
What is the Star Chamber?
It was originally set up by Henry VII and was also used by Wolsey as a royal court to give out justice on the King’s behalf. He encouraged poor people to bring cases to the court
What is Enclosure?
It is the practice of the rich people fencing off land which meant that farmers could be forced off their land and into poverty
