Catherine of Aragon
Catherine’s inability to produce Henry VIII a male heir contributed to the King’s ‘Great Matter’. Henry VIII desired a male heir to secure the Tudor dynasty.
Children
By the end of Henry VIII’s life, he had fathered three legitimate children with his wives:
> Mary from his marriage with Catherine of Aragon.
> Elizabeth from his marriage with Anne Boleyn.
> Edward from his marriage with Jane Seymour.
He also fathered several illegitimate children during his life.
Threats to the line of succession
The Duke of Buckingham, Edward Stafford, threatened the line of succession. The descendant of Edward III, the Duke had a claim to the throne. Wolsey arrested the Duke of Buckingham for treason and he was executed in 1521.
