Henry VIII after 1529 Cromwell's fall from power Flashcards
Why was Cromwell a significant advisor of Henrys?
Secured the royal supremacy- increased royal power
Architect of the break from Rome
Brought Henry considerable wealth through the dissolution
When was cromwell arrested, and what was he charged with?
Treason in June 1540
Charged with heresy- those who brought charges against him suggested he was plotting to bring in a full protestant church
Likely religion was used as an excuse to remove him
Why is it unlikely it was Cromwell’s aim to implement an entirely protestant church?
Well aware of the King’s aversion to such moves
Witnessed punishment of those who denied transubstantiation
What was one of the underlying reasons for his fall (alliance)?
Peace between france and habsburgs left england isolated. Fears of a catholic crusade led to Cromwell persuading Henry to make alliance with germany by marrying Anne of Cleves in 1539. He thought she was ugly, didn’t prevent franco-habsburg hostilities, marriage unnecessary
Why is Henry’s failure in marriage to anne of cleves not a factor of Cromwell’s fall from power?
Soon after he was rewarded with title of the Earl of Essex, with no nobility connections
What was one of the underlying reasons for his fall (DofN)?
Factional politics. Gardiner and Norfolk (Catholic faction) enticed Henry with Catherine Howard. He became infatuated with her, led to increased Catholic influence. This possibly led to increased belief of the stories about his chief minister (in terms of religion), they rushed the King through attainder which led to the fall of Cromwell.
Further enforced as his execution took place the same day as Henry’s marriage to CH.
