Edmund Tudor and Margaret Beaufort (granddaughter of Edward III, daughter of John of Gaunt)
What was different about the way he came to the throne compared with Henry VIII?
He became king through battle rather than inheritance
What did some people believe the way he came to the throne meant?
That it was God’s judgement that he should be king
What was the result of Henry being in exile in France and Brittany for a lot of his life?
He had limited knowledge of England, no experience of government and no training to be king
Why had Henry been exiled to France?
Henry VI was overthrown in 1471 so he could no longer live in Britain
Where had he lived before he lived in France?
From 1457 to 1471 he lived in Wales
What had Richard III’s actions resulted in?
The alienation of many Yorkists who then transferred their support to Henry once he came to the throne
When was Henry VII crowned?
October 30th 1485
What did Parliament pass in November 1485?
An act of attainder against Richard III and 28 of his followers
When did Henry VII get married, and who did he get married to?
January 1486 and to Elizabeth of York (descendent of Edward IV)
Why did Henry marry Elizabeth of York?
She was a better line to the throne; it was fulfilling a promise made to the ex-Yorkists
