Act of Attainder
Declares a landowner guilty of rebelling against a monarch; the noble attained lost his title, lands and sometimes their life - heirs also disinherited
Tonnage and poundage
The right to raise revenue for the whole reign from imports and exports
Magnate
Member of the higher ranks of nobility
Prerogative Rights
The rights and powers which the monarch could exercise without parliament’s consent
Courtier
A person who attends the king’s court as an advisor
Privy Chamber
Made up of the king’s close servants - gave them direct influence
Extraordinary Revenue
Money raised through one-off payments - usually for emergencies
The Lord Chamberlain
Experienced nobleman, member of the king’s council, personal friend - organized court
Bonds and recognisances
Legal bond to perform an action or forfeit money + a formal acknowledgement of debt or obligation
Crown lands
Land that is owned by the monarch
Wardship
Allowed crown to gain money from property held by minors
Feudal aid
Tax from the crown for knighting eldest son/marriage of eldest daughter or ransom
Statute of Uses
Prevented property becoming a trust, which prevented tax on deceased person’s estate
Council Learned
System to ensure the king raised money and enforced his prerogative rights
The Kings Council
Function to advise the king, administer realm, make legal judgements
The Kings Court
Centre of government - where king gave and removed status
JP’s
Maintain law and order in the country - usually local gentry
Pension
Payments from foreign powers
Embargo
Restriction on trade to punish a target country and prevent it from carrying out certain policies
Intercursus Malus
Attempt to further English trader interest in Burgundy - never imposed
Intercursus Magnus
Major treaty that restored trade links between England and Burgundy
Tariff
Tax or duty to be paid on a particular class of imports or exports
Real wages
Value of income in relation to the price of goods
Open-field system
System of landed estates renting strips of land to tenants to farm
Merchant Adventurers
Trading organization, dominated cloth trade
Hanseatic League
Commercial union to control trade in the Baltic Sea
Navigation Acts
Encouraged English ships to be used to transport to and from English ports
