What is the council?
Around 6/7 members who supported Henry VII in making key decisions.
What were the 3 key aims of the council?
1.To advise the king
2.To administer the realm on the kings behalf
3.To make legal judgments
What was the Council Learned in Law?
Maintain the kings revenue and exploit his prerogative rights.
What is prerogative rights?
Prerogative rights: rights or powers the monarch could exercise without requiring the consent of parliament.
Who first ruled the Council Learned in Law and who took over?
Sir Reginald Bray was its first leader then Richard Empson and Edmund Dudley took over.
Why did the nobles not like Empson and Dudley and what happened when Henry VII died?
They would fine the nobility not just when owed but they would make up payments the nobility has to pay. They were both executed.
What is the royal court?
Centre of the government, it was a group of people to be where the king is at all times. It was magnificent and generous. It was where the power of the monarch was demonstrated to all the couriers in attendance. Support for the king or other influential persons which could be obtained which would be useful in legal problems.
What was the chamber?
The private areas of the court; also a key department for the efficient collection of royal revenues.
What was the Lord Chamberlain?
Also known as the Chamberlain, a member of the kings council and a close friend, who had administrative and political power. Often speaking for the monarch in an official capacity, and was also responsible for organising court ceremonies.
What was the privy chamber?
A group of loyal trusted members of the nobility were close personal servants of the monarch. It’s members had direct access to the monarch and therefore could influence them more directly.

What were the parliaments two main aims?
To pass laws and grant taxation to the crown.
What is a bond?
A legal document which bound an individual to another to perform an action or forfeit a specified sum of money if they failed to do so.
What is a Recognisance?
A formal acknowledgment of a debt or other obligation which could be enforced by means of financial penalty.
