When was the council learned in the law established?
What was it’s purpose?
1495- Empson and Dudley
Dealt with managing and pursing feudal dues
All members had legal training and acted as both investigators and judges.
Who were the Justices of Peace?
Land owners appointed them, they were responsible for the maintenance of public order in a county.
Roughly 18 per county

What/when was the Star Chamber?
Established in 1487.
Responsible for persuading anyone who behaved in rebellious/ lawless manners
What was the council of the north?
A council situated in York, ensuring good governance. Run mostly by the Percy’s, it defended northern counties
How did Henry govern Wales?
he appointed Jasper Tudor to govern and Rhys ap Thomas to govern south west wales
What is local government
Carried out by officials directly responsible for the king
How was parliament used in Henry’s reign?
Only met 7 times in 24 years, as Henry didn’t like to ask for money.
Parliament still was used to pass laws against riots and retaining, so not totally neglected.
What is crown lands?
The act of Henry claiming all the land held by the Yorkis, Lancaster, the Earldoms of Richmond and Warwick.

What is feudal dues?
Henry’s right to demand money, as the king was viewed to be the sole land owner.
This ensured good behaviour.
1487- £350
1607-£6,000
Relief- paid by heir when gets inheritance
Marriage - king arranging a marriage and getting profit
Wardship- control state if heir underage
Livery - payment when they come of age
What is customs duties?
Tax for when good enter/leave the country

What are Legal dues
Money from fines payed by people who appeared before the kings court.
1495 - sir William Stanley £9,000 upfront and then £1,000 p.a
What are clerical taxes?
Taxes that the king could levy on the church
What are loans and benevolences?
The kings right to ask for financial help and the time of an emergency.
1491- Brittany crisis - £48,000
What is the other type of feudal dues?
The right to demand money, but for a specific occasion
- 1504: £30,000 from parliament for Arthur’s knight hood. But he died in 1503.
