A

Excommunication meant that you would not be allowed to take communion any more. This was serious, as it meant you may not end up being able to go to heaven!

It’s normally the Archbishop of Canterbury (Becket). But Becket was in exile. Henry got Archbishop of York to do it, which was a snub to the prestige of Becket’s office.
