What is HSP?

A

Henoch-Schonleipurpura - a disease involving the inflammation of small blood vessels (vasculitis). Associated with Hx of viral illness.

What happens to organs due to the inflammation of small blood vessels in HSP?

A

Leaky blood vessels:

Skin, intestines, kidneys and joints

How does Henoch-Schonleipurpura present?

A

Rash with small bruises over legs/buttocks.

The rash will have a raised appearance.

How do we diagnose henoch-schonleipurpura? [4]

A
  • Smear of Vesicles
  • PCR (bloods and CSF)
  • Serology (look for past infection)
  • Vascular rashes are diagnostic

What is the treatment for HSP?

A

There is no treatement, it is usually self-resolving after a few weeks.

(can give steroids if kidney function is affected)

What check ups do we conduct for patients who have suffered from HSP?

A

Six month check up to assess kidney function.
