Abortion
Expulsion or extraction from its mother of an embryo or fetus weighing 500g or less when it is not capable of independent survival
Threatened Miscarriage
A clinical entity where the process of miscarriage has started but has not progressed to a state where recovery is impossible
Inevitable Miscarriage
Clinical entity of abortion where the changes have progressed to a stare from where continuation of pregnancy is impossible
Complete Miscarriage
When the products of conception are expelled en mass
Incomplete Miscarriage
When the entire products of conception are not expelled, instead a part of it is left inside the uterine cavity
Missed Miscarriage / Early Fetal Demise
When the fetus is dead and retained inside the uterus for a variable period
Septic Abortion
Any abortion associated with clinical evidences of infection of the uterus and it’s contents
Criteria:
- Rise of temp of at least 100.4F or 38C for 24hrs or more.
- Offensive or purulent vaginal discharge
- Other evidences of pelvic infection such as lower abdominal pain and tenderness.
Recurrent Miscarriage
The sequence of 2 or more spontaneous abortions as documented by either sonography or on histopathology, before 20 weeks.
