How do you determine if a patient is having hemoptysis versus hematemesis?
A
hemoptysis–> + blood streaked sputum
no nausea, vomiting, or black tarry stools

If you determine a patient has hemoptysis, what should you order?
A
- CXR, CT, possible a bronchoscopy depending on what you find

How do you determine if a patient is having hematemesis versus hemoptysis?
A
- there will be no blood streaked sputum; patient will have nausea and or vomiting
- possibly black tarry stools if they have been having the bleeding for awhile
