Hemopoiesis Flashcards
What is hemopoiesis
This is the development, differentiation and formation of blood cellular components
Hemopoietic sites
Mesoblastic stage : 2nd week iul- 3rd month
Occurs in the yolk sac
Hepatic stage : 2nd month- 7th month
Occurs in the liver
Myeloid stage: 6th month- adult
Occurs in the bone marrow
Hemopoietic marrow in adults
Central skeleton ( skull, spine, thoracic cage, iliac crest)
Proximal ends of femur and humeri
Stages of hemopoietic cell dev.
Hemopoiesis begins with a stem cell
The stem cell can either undergo self renewal or differentiation
Differentiation- lineage selection- physical maturation- functional maturation- death
The hemopoietic stem cell morphologically resembles
A small lymphocyte

Immunological testing
Stem cell is postive for
-cd34
-ac133
-thy-1
-c-kit
Immunological testing
Stem cell is negative for
- cd33
-cd38 - lineage markers
- hla-dr
Stem cell plasticity
This refers to pluripotent stem cells and their ability to generate different types of tissues.
How many stem cells do humans have
Humans possess 2104 stem cells

Stromal cells and micro vascular network
Stromal cells contain
Adipoctyes, macrophages, fibroblasts and endothelial cells
Characteristics of progenitor cells
- loss of pluripotency
- ## lack of capacity for self renewal
Existence of progenitor cells
Using in vitro culture
Early progenitors- assayed using bone marrow stroma
Late progenitors- assayed using semi-solid media
Precursors of erythropoiesis
- proerythroblast
- basophilic erythroblast
-polychromatic erythroblast - orthochromatic erythroblast
- reticulocyte
