Hemoglobin Flashcards
Anisocytosis, red cell size variation is measured by:
Red cell Distribution Width /RDW
*shape variation: POIKILOCYTOSIS
Cyanmethemoglobin Method measures all forms of Hb except.
SULFHEMOGLOBIN
Red cells withOUT central pallor; due to spectrin deficiency
Spherocyte
Sea Urchin cells; Burr cells; sometimes reffered to as crenated red cells.
Echinocytes
- seen in UREMIA
- reversible to original shape
A slit like central pallor, seen in ALCOHOLISM
RH NULL SYNDROME
H. STOMATOCYTOSIS
Stomatocytes / mouth cell
*membrane defect resulting to increased SODIUM and decreased POTASSIUM content.
Schistocyte is seen in: (3)
Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia/ MAHA
Traumatic Hemolytic anemia
Severe burns
A scistocyte with horn- like projections, blister cell.
Keratocytes
Dacrocytes/ tear drop cells is seen in: (5M)
Myelofribrosis with Myeloid Metaplasia
Myelopthisic anemia
Metastatic tumor
Most common hemoglobin variant; due to glu to val substitution at 6th position of beta chain.
Sickle cell anemia / Hgb S
Due to glu-lys substitution at 6th position of beta chain; SECOND most common variant of hgb.
Hgb C
Known as pocketbook cells ; Washington monument.
Hgb SC
Due to glu-lys substitution at 26th position of beta chain, THIRD most common variant of Hgb.
Hgb E
Also known as Hgb C Georgetown.
Hgb C Harlem
Asp-lys substitution at 68th position of ALPHA chain.
Only significant alpha chain variant.
Hgb G Philadelphia
Amino acid DELETION at positions 91-95 of the beta chain.
Hgb Gun Hill
‘Gone’-deletions
