Hemispheric Lateralisation & Localisation of Function Flashcards
A2 content
What is the idea of localisation?
Particular parts of the brain are associated with particular functions and processes.
What is the idea of the brain being holistic?
The idea there isn’t specific areas for functions, the whole brain is used at the same time.
Name the four main lobes.
Parietal, frontal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe.
What is the occipital lobe responsible for?
Sight (visual cortex).
What is the temporal lobe responsible for?
Sound (auditory cortex)
What is the parietal lobe responsible for?
Sensory perception and integration.
What is the frontal lobe responsible for?
Higher cognitive functions, memory, emotions, impulse.
Where is the motor cortex?
Frontal lobe
Where is the somatosensory area?
Parietal (senses)
Where is the Broca’s area?
Left of frontal lobe.
Where is Wernicke’s area?
Left temporal lobe.
What is Broca’s Aphasia?
Disorder characterised by problems producing speech with fluency.
What is Wernicke’s Aphasia?
Disorder characterised by problems with language comprehension.
What is the idea of lateralisation?
The two hemispheres (left and right) functions different in separate hemispheres.
What is the belief about language?
Localised to left hemisphere.
