Hemispheric Lateralisation AO1 & AO3 Flashcards
What is Hemispheric Lateralisation?
2Hemispheres are functionally different; certain behaviours and metal processes are mainly controlled by one hemisphere
How is the language centre lateralised?
RH - only produces rudimentary words/phrases / Synthesiser
LH - contains the two main lang centres / analyser
Give 2 examples of functions that aren’t lateralised
Vision
Somasensory
What function is cross wired
Motor
RH controls left
LH controls right
What is Corpus Callosum responsible for?
communicating messages between the hemispheres
Who conducted Key Research into Hemispheric Lateralisation?
Sperry - research into Split Brain
What were the 4 tasks done in Sperry’s research?
1) Describing what you see
2) Recognition by Touch
3) Matching Faces
4) Composite Words
What were findings in ‘Describing what you see’?
Pic in the right visual field could be described
Pic in left visual field CANT be described b/c of lack of lang centres in RH
What were the findings for ‘Recognition by Touch’?
Object in left visual field could be matched up by touch to a physical object with left hand (RH)
What were the findings for ‘Composite words’?
2 word shown at the same time on each visual field - the ppt would pic up the object they saw with their left visual field but say the word they saw in their right
What were the findings for ‘Match faces’?
Face shown in left visual field (RH) was selected
Face shown in right visual field (LH) ignored
