Hemispheric Lateralisation Flashcards
What is hemispheric lateralisation
Idea that the brain is split into two halves
What does the left hemisphere control
Info from the right side of the body
What does the right hemisphere control
Info from the left side of the body
What does the corpus collosum do
Connects two halves of the brain allowing communication so the brain works as one organ
Who investigated split brain research of the corpus collosum?
Sperry and Gazzaniga
Who was sperry and gazzanigers sample
Epilepsy patients with corpus collosum cut
What was Gazzanigers procedure for the visual task
Natural experiment
11 patients
Look at white screen with black dot
Image or word presented to one side of dot
Say what u see
What were the results of Gazzanigers visual task
Picture presented to left visual field you can’t describe what u saw as no language centre on the right side
Showing they did not recieve the info
What was the procedure of Gazzanigers tactile test
Object placed to left or right hand
Feel object but not see it
What were the results of Gazzanigers tactile test
If object placed in left hand then patient could not describe what they felt but if on right hand they could describe verbally what they felt
Evaluate split brain research
+ practical app- helps educators present info in a way that’s creative and requires the right hemisphere
-hemispheric functions overstated- language not restricted to left hemisphere- Turk found patient JW developed capacity to speak in right hemisphere- shows adaption to damage
- doesn’t consider how lateralisation changes with age- szaflarski found language becomes lateralised to the left with age in kids but then decreases as u become older- possibly due to extra processing resourcess
- SPerry and Gazzaniger- small sample- 11- possibly underlying physical disorders- atypical- lacks population validity
