Hemispatial Neglect Flashcards
What is hemispatial neglect?
a neurological syndrome associated with unilateral cortical lesions
What fraction of right hemisphere stroke patients does it affect?
2/3
What are the symptoms?
a lack of awareness of objects and events on the visual side contralateral to the lesions (usually left visual field due to right hemispheric lesions)
Who are the researchers involved?
Driver & Halligan (1991) and Vuillumier et al (2002)
Is the neglect tied to the object or the visual field?
object
How do we know this?
participants fail to detect differences on the left side of an image that fell on the right side of their visual midline
What can mediate the neglect?
Emotion
In a study using positive/neutral/negative faces on the neglectful side of the visual field - what was found?
that emotional valiancy breaks through the spatial gradient
