Hemichordates Flashcards
In hemichordates, of the 5 diagnostic chordate characteristics, which one is present?
pharyngeal slits
Hemichordates have a ___________which was formerly thought to be the notochord.
stomochord
Is there an iodine-binding tissue in hemichordates?
No
Do hemichordates have a post-anal tail?
No
Why are hemichordates said to be related to chordates?
Because they possess similar larvae similar to those of Echinodermata
Hemichordates are recognized by two classes, what are they?
enteropneusta (acorn worms) and pterobranchia
The body of the acorn worm has three parts what are they?
proboscis, collar, and trunk
what are the functions of the proboscis and collar of the acorn worm?
used for burrowing and locomotion
what is on the surface of the proboscis of the acorn worm?
cilia
what does the cilia on the proboscis do?
creates currents that flow over the mucus covering the proboscis. microorganisms, particles, and water are then traveled to the mouth by the cilia
where is the mouth of an acorn worm?
lies ventral and anterior to the collar and opens into the pharynx
what do pharyngeal pores do in the acorn worm?
allow water to be directed in the pharynx
