Hematology vocabulary Flashcards
What percent of blood is plasma versus formed elements
Plasma 50-55%
Formed Elements 45-50%
The liver produces which plasma proteins
Albumin
Fibrinogen
The plasma produces which proteins
Globulins
- Alpha
- Beta
- Gamma (IgG, IgM, IgA, IgG)
Types of granulocytes
Neutrophils Basophils Eosinophils Mast Cells (Grains fill the mast)
Types of Agranulocytes
Lymphocytes
Monocytes
Storage vs free cells in blood
1) Granulocytes
2) Thrombocytes
3) Erythrocytes
1) 50/50
2) 30/70
3) 0/100
Stages in the life cycle of an RBC
1) Erythroid progenitor (erythropoietin acts on this)
2) Committed proerythroblast
3) Normoblast (nucleus shrinks)
4) Reticulocyte
5) Erythrocyte
Purpose of MCV
Indicates the size of RBC’s therefore determines the volume of RBC’s
Purpose of MCH
Shows the average hemoglobin concentration of RBC’s. Is always interpreted with MCV (smaller RBC’s have less Hgb)
What is MCHC
The average Hgb in a deciliter of RBC’s
Purpose of MCHC
To determine if the cell is Normochromic, Hyperchromic or Hypochromic
Purpose of the RDW
Determine variations in RBC size (anisocytosis) determines age of RBC’s. is a SD of the MCV (young are larger than older)
