Complete Blood Count (CBC)
Helped to diagnose conditions such as anemia, infection and many other blood disorders.
AKA Hematology Profile
White Blood Count (WBC)
Counts number of white blood cells present in blood.
WBC fight disease causing organisms, often used in the diagnosis of infection.
Red Blood Count (RBC)
Measures red blood cells (erythrocytes) per cubic millimeter of blood.
Hemoglobin (Hgb/Hb)
Hemoglobin is what makes our blood red.
Test can determine a need for additional blood (transfusion).
Aides the diagnosis of different types of anemia.
Hematocrit
Measures the volume of RBC in whole blood.
Platelet Count
Count of cells that are essential for coagulation to take place.
Differential (Diff)
A differential reports the various types of WBC found in a blood specimen.
Manual differentials must be specifically ordered by the physician.
An automated differential is done on all CBCs.
Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)
Referred to as “sed rate”.
ESR determines the rate at which RBCs settle out of the liquid portion of the blood.
Helps to determine the progression of inflammatory disease.
Peripheral Smear
Shows how blood cells and platelets look under a microscope.
Test can show any changes in the blood cell and platelet size and shape, may be a sign of a blood disorder or blood cancer.
Reticulocyte Count
Reticulocyte are immature blood cells.
Counting the reticulocytes determines bone marrow activity.
This test is often used to diagnose anemia.
Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) and Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT)
Two tests are the same thing and used to monitor Heparin dosages.
International Ratio (INR) and Prothrombin Time (PT)
INR is the way to standardize the PT results.
PT measures the clotting ability of the blood.
Result will determine the dosage of the drug Coumadin.
D-Differ
Measures substance in the blood that’s released when a blood clot dissolves.
If the test shows high levels may indicate a deep vein blood clot (DVT).
Cell Panel/Auto Diff on lab req means a CBC and includes the following tests:
-Plates
-HGB
-RBC
-WBC
-Differential
