Hematology 1 Flashcards
What are three reasons for anemia?
1) Bone marrow not working
2) Blood loss (eg hemorrhage)
3) RBC’s bring destroyed. Eg, parasite or IMHA.
Which species has nucleated RBC’s?
NON-mammals
What is the MOST common reason for low lymphocytes? Esp which species?
Stress. Cats
What is the #1 thing that causes Heinz body formation? Esp cats.
Acetaminophen.
What is the stain for RBC’s? For reticulocytes?
RBC's= Wright stain Reticulocytes= BRILLIANT CRESYL BLUE
What should you think when you see HIGH albumin levels?
Dehydydration!
ALT is mostly ___ specific.
Liver
PU/PD can ___ electrolyte levels.
Decrease (b/c all getting flushed out)
How do you calculate the Absolute nucleated blood cell count?
% x total number of nucleated cells
part/whole=%
How do you calculate the Absolute reticulocyte count?
% reticulocytes x number of RBC’s
What would happen if you contaminated the contents of the red top tube with EDTA or Citrate?
Your sample in the red tube would have abnormally low levels of Ca and high levels of K+. The Ca levels would be so low the animal “shouldn’t be alive”.
Name all the tubes and what they contain.
red- nothing purple- EDTA green- Heparin blue- Citrate red and black- barrier to separate serum from RBC's, prevents utilization of Glc by RBC's.
How much blood is needed for a CBC or biochemical profile?
5ml
What is the smallest size needle you should use for filling tubes?
20G
You have to fill both a red and a purple tube. Which should you fill first?
Purple, but be careful not to contamination red top tube!!
fill purple first b/c time is of essence and don’t want blood to clot
