Hema. Mod.A Lec1 Flashcards
What is Hematopoiesis
Where ?
Formation and development of BLOOD CELLS
Bone marrow
What is Erythropoiesis ?
Development of mature RED blood cells
Components of the hematopoietic system ?
1- BONE MARROW
2-LIVER
3-SPLEEN
4- lymph nodes
5- tonsils
6-thymus
7-payer’s patches
Volume of blood
4-5 L
Composition of blood
45% Blood cells
55% Plasma cells
Types of blood cells (3 types ?)
1- RBC
2- Platelets
Phagocytes:
- Neutrophils
- Basophils
- Eosinophils
- Monocytes
Lymphocytes;
- T cells
- B cells
Phagocytes include : 7
- neutrophils
- monocyte
- macrophage
- eosinophils
- basophils
- mast cells
- dendritic cells
Types of WBC’s (2) and their examples.
1-GRANULAR:
-neutrophils,eosinophils,basophils
2- AGRANULAR:
-lymphocytes, monocytes
Sites of hematopoiesis in FETUS
0-2 months in yolk sac
2-7 months in liver,spleen
6-9 months in bone marrow
In infants blood is formed in
All bones
In children blood is formed in
Long bones
In adults blood is formed in
Flat bones
Long bones
What is meant by Extramedullary Hematopoiesis
Synthesis of blood cells OUTSIDE bone marrow
Occurs in cases of bone marrow diseases
Medulla = cavity
What is the mother cell of the hematopoietic system ?
Stem cell (pluripotent stem cells)
Characteristics of stem cell (3)
1- Self renewal
2- Able to differentiate into specialized cells (which give mature cells)
3- Multiplication to form more daughter cells
How are mature cells made ?
After stem cells are exposed to growth hormone
Hormones involved in hematopoiesis
Erythropoietin
Thrombopoietin
EPO and TPO are regulated by
Interferon gamma and TGF beta (cytokines)
Where does the stem cell settle down ?
In the STROMA of bone marrow
What is the composition of bone marrow stroma ? (2)
1- Stromal Cells
2- Microvascular network
