Helpful Clinical Pathology Terms - Week 1 Flashcards
Acanthocyte
spiculated or spiney erythrocyte
Agglutination
clumping of cells
Anemia
decrease in hemoglobin value, PCV, or erythrocyte count
Anisocytosis
variation in size of cells
Crenation
Shrinkage of cells in a hypertonic solution. Have star like appearance
Erythrocytopenia
decreased numbers of erythrocytes in the peripheral blood
Erythropoiesis
production of erythrocytes
Heinz Body
areas of denatured hemoglobinit is a small, round to irregular refractile inclusion found either singularly or double within the cell or bulging from the surface
Hemoglobinemia
hemoglobin is dissolved out of the erythrocytes into the plasma
Hemolysis
destruction of erythrocytes by lysis
Howell-Jolly Body
small portion of a nucleus that has been retained in the cell, usually a single, round body located randomly within the cell
Hyperchromasia
more intense hemoglobin color (due to thickness of the cell)
Hypochromasia
decreased density of the hemoglobin color
Macrocyte
larger than normal RBC
Macrocytosis
increased number of large RBCs
Microcyte
smaller than normal RBC
Microcytosis
increased number of small RBCs
Normochromasia
normal hemoglobin color in a RBC
Normocytic
RBCs are of normal size
Poikilocytosis
variation in shape of cells
