Helminths Flashcards
What is a Helminth?
A parasitic worm.
What are the 3 different types of Helminths?
- Nematodes.
- Trematodes.
- Cestodes.
What are the 2 different types of nematodes?
- Bursate.
- Non-bursate.
What is a Nematode?
Roundworm.
What is a Trematode?
Fluke.
What is a Cestode?
Tapeworm.
What sort of migration do nematodes take?
Hepato-tracheal.
Outline the morphology of a nematode?
- Buccal cavity.
- Leaf-like crown (lips).
- Teeth.
- Males have bursa and spicules.
- Female have vulval flap.
- surrounded by cuticle.
Outline the morphology of a nematode egg?
Thick pitted shell.
What is a bursa?
A fluid filled cavity - in nemotodes used for copulation.
Why do nematodes undergo arrested larval development?
- To avoid enviromental and immunological conditions.
- Reduce metabolic rate.
What is another name for arrested larval development?
Hypobiosis.
What does epidemiology mean?
Factors that contribute to disease and health.
What are the 2 different types of tremetodes?
- Monogeneans.
- Digeneans.
What is a monogenea?
A small parasitic flatworm (trematode) with one opening.
