Helminth Infection Flashcards
1
Q
Threadworms
A
- Anthelmintic’s are effective in threadworm infections, but they need to be combined with hygienic measures to break the cycle of autoinfection. ALL members of the family require treatment.
- Itching is a symptom (due to female worms laying ova on the anal skin)… scratching the area causes the ova to be spread on the fingers and then to the mouth, often via food eaten with unwashed hands.
- Thus, washing hands and scrubbing nails before each meal and after the toilet is essential.
- MEBENDAZOLE is the drug of choice for treating threadworm infection in patients over 6 months. It is given as a SINGLE dose but as reinfection is common, a second dose may be given after 2 weeks.
