Heirarchy of Structure and Cell Specialisation Flashcards
Cell specilaistion, bio-macromolecules, hierarchy of structure
What are specialised cells?
Cells designed to carry out particular functions in the body
What are some examples of specialised cells?
- Blood cells
- Nerve Cells
- Liver Cells
What is the correct order of the biological hierarchy from the smallest to the largest structure?
Cells → Tissues → Organs → Organ Systems → Organism.
What are stem cells
Undifferentiated cells that have the potential to become any type of specialised cell.
What are complex molecules?
typically made up of chains and rings that contain hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms, as well as carbon atoms
Carbohydrates
Used as a energy source, most common compounds in living things
-Monomer: monosaccharides
Lipids
Energy storage, structural components of membranes, specific biological functions (transmission of chemical signals)
-Monomer: Fatty Acids & Glycerol
Nucleic Acid
A large molecule made up of nucleotides.
