Hagalaz “haw-gaw-laws”

Need. Distress, testing, suffering. Friction creates fire. “n”

Magical uses: Overcoming fate and stress. Developing magical will. Sudden inspiration and inner might.

Need is constricting on the chest — although to the children of men it often becomes — a help and salvation nevertheless — if they heed it in time

Magical uses: Strengthen concentration and will. Binding (as in constraint or constriction). To halt movement.

Ice is very cold — and exceedingly slippery — it glistens clear as glass — very much like gems — a floor made of frost — is fair to see

Elhaz “ale-hawz” or “all-geese”

Elk. Protection. Spiritual connection. “zz”

Magical uses: Protection. Communication and connection with guardian spirit. Spiritual cleansing. Strengthening magical power. Traveling through other worlds or astral travel.

Elk’s sedge (kenning for sword) has its home — most often in the fen — it waxes in the water — and grimly wounds — and reddens (burns) with blood — any man (bairn) — who, in any way — tries to grasp it
