What are the Essentials of Dx for a Corneal Abrasion?
A
- Severe Pain
- Tearing
- Photophobia
- Hx of trauma to the Eye (fingernail, contact lens)

What are some physical findings of Corneal Abrasion?
A
- Change in Visual Acuity
- Fluorescent staining reveals a deeper green area at the abrasion than surrounding cornea.
- Photophobia and incr Lacrimation @ exam

Tx for Corneal Abrasion
A
* Cyclopentolate 1% - one Drop now, Repeat 6-8hrs Prn (Drop will burn for 10-15 sec) * Erythromycin Ophthalmic Ointment QID or * Tobramycin Ointment QID

Dispo and Complication for Corneal Abrasion
A
Retain onboard
- Corneal ulcer, loss of vision

What is a topical anesthetic that you can use to facilitate exam if Pt is in pain or it is necessary to touch the cornea or conjunctiva?
A
Proparacaine 0.5%
Tetracaine 0.5%

How do you administer a fluorescent strip?
A
- Moistened with 1 drop of sterile saline or topical anesthetic
- PT turns eye upward and touch it to the inside of lower lid
- Have PT blink several times and examine under Cobalt BLUE illumination
