Q

What is the paradox of hedonism?

A disadvantage of hedonism

A
  • if only happiness is intrinsically valuable, then it is rational to single-mindedly pursue it
  • but this isn’t rational, as constantly actively pursuing happiness tends to lead to unhappiness
obsession with happiness obstructs us from finding it

Q

What is the moral disadvantage of hedonism?

A
  • hedonism doesn’t differentiate between happiness gained from evil deeds and happiness from good deeds
  • it considers both of these kinds of happiness as equally good and necessary for you, ignoring their origins

Q

How is the Experience Machine a disadvantage of hedonism?

A
  • imagine a machine that erases your memory upon entrance and simulates an incredibly happy made for you individually
  • most people wouldn’t choose simulated, false happiness over reality because they would consider it a worse life
  • therefore, hedonism cannot be true
