Heating & Cooling Flashcards
What does a thermometer do?
it measures the temperature of the heat
What temperature does water boil at?
Water boils at 100*C
What temperature is a cup of tea?
A cup of tea is 75*C
What temperature is a bath tub?
A bath tub is 50*C
What is a Conductor?
A conductor is a transfer of heat energy through a substance from a hotter part to a cooler part
What is normal room temperature?
Room temperature is 20*C
What is our body temperature?
Body temperature is 37*C
What does evaporating mean?
The change of a liquid into a gas by gaining thermal energy
How does ice turn into water?
It gets heated by heat energy
A small ball of metal can pass through a ring, a pupil heats the ball then tries to put it through the ring this time it does’st work, why?
The ball gets bigger (Expands its particles by heat)
A metal spoon in a stove is really hot, but the wooden handle of the stove isn’t hot, why?
The Metal spoon has free electrons so it gets heated quickly. But the wooden handle doesn’t have electrons
so it doesn’t react with the hot stove.
What is Infra red?
Infra red: it carries thermal energy from hotter object to a cooler object.
What does Expand mean?
Expand is a short term for getting bigger e.g ball and ring, ball gets heated so it expands ( gets bigger)
What is Contraction?
This is the opposite of expansion, A material gets smaller
What does Convection mean?
It is a circular movement of hot gas (or liquid) rising and cool gas(or liquid) falling.
What is insulation?
Insulation is keeping something warm.
What are 3 states of matter?
Solid->Liquid->Gas.
How do we measure tempreture
We measure temperature in *C
What is Thermal energy?
Thermal energy is Heat energy.
What part of the house looses the most heat?
The walls they loose 4000 Joules
How much heat do the windows loose ?
Windows loose 1500 Joules
