heating and cooling Flashcards
Temperature?
How hot or cold something is .
Thermometer?
To measure how hot or cold something is.
What is convection ?
the transfer of heat energy through the movement of the particles themselves.
What is conduction ?
the transfer of heat energy through a substance from a hotter part to a cooler part .
what is radiation?
the transfer of heat energy by waves .
conductors and insulators ?
different materials allow heat energy to flow through them differently. A material is a good heat conductor if heat energy flows through it easily.
what materials are good thermal insulators?
Glass, Wood, Plastic and Air
A change of state ?
a change of state occurs if a material is heated up or cooled down so that it changes from one state to another .
Expand ?
a material getting bigger .
Infa-red ?
carries thermal energy from a hotter object to a cooler object
Evaporation ?
a change of a liquid to a gas gaining thermal energy helps the change
What is temperature measured in ?
degrees celsius
When you heat a solid or liquid what happens?
it expands because the particles vibrate more and take up more space.
What happens when you cool a solid or liquid ?
it contracts because the particles vibrate less and up less space
What are the changes of state ?
the changes of state are melting, boiling, condensing and freezing
