Q

What is radiation?

A

Radiation is the form of heat energy that travels through the air particles so that you can feel the heat without having to touch it
e.g. a fire or a radiatior.

Q

What is conduction?

A

Conduction is heat transfer through a solid or a liquid ( but manly in solids as it works better as the particles are closer together) conduction happens best in conductors e.g. metals, but it doesn’t work well in insulators e.g. foam or wood.

Q

What is convection?

A

Comvection takes place in liquids and gases e.g. steam. It works by the hot air rising and meeting the cool air it passes on the energy then it cools and sinks becoming denser and creating a convection current.

Q

What are the changes in state?

A

The changes in state take place when something is heated or cooled. When a solid melts at 0° it turns into a liquid. Then once a liquid is heated at 100° it evaporates turning into a gas. Then a gas cools and condenses and turns back into a liquid to then freeze back into a solid.

Q

What is heat and temperature?

A

When we know the temperature of something we know the heat not the amount of heat energy.
Temperature is measured in degrees Celsius (ºC).
Heat (thermal) energy is measured in joules (J)
