what was industrial relations act of 1971
aimed to balance individual employee rights with union workers whilst reducing strikes
why was industrial relations act unsuccessful
too similar to In Place of Strife so it was unpopular among union members. the TUC defied the act by commanding everyone to de-register from the NIRC
what was the miners strike
miners claimed 47% pay rise and govt rejected so 280,000 miners went on strike causing govt to declare a state of emergency
the govt quickly settled it with a payrise
what was the impact of the miners strike on the government
1) encouraged other workers to strike
2) the success added inflationary pressure
3) govt looked weaker than trade unions
4) emphasised the failure of the industrial relations act

he defied his policy of less state intervention when he nationalised Rolls Royce Aerospace after they filed for bankruptcy in 1971.

was formed to regulate prices and salaries, was successful until the oil price shock of november 1973
how did the Oil Price Shock affect the govt
oil prices quadrupled and Britain depended on oil for 50% of energy sources. naturally this messed up all prices and wasn’t resolved until february 1974.
