Heat Treatment of Metals Flashcards
1
Q
What is heat treatment
A
changing the structural of materials to improve its mechanical properties, such as strength and hardness, and is mostly applied after the part’s geometry has been defined
2
Q
key terminology
A
Annealing - softening the metal back to its original pre-work hardened properties
Hardening - Using controlled heating and cooling to increase the hardness of the metal
Tempering - using controlled heating to reduce hardness
Quenching - the act of rapidly cooling the worked part in oil, water, or another fluid
3
Q
how is the annealing processed done
A
it resets the crystallization formation of the material back to its normal elastic and yielding behavior
