Heat Transfers Flashcards
1
Q
Density
A
Measures how much mass there is per unit volume in a material
DENSITY= MASS (g/kg) ➗VOLUME (cm3 or m3)
Units of density are either: g/cm3 or kg/m3
Weird P = density = mass divided by volume
2
Q
Flow of heat energy from hot to cold areas
A
Anything WARMER than room temperature will TRANSFER ENERGY to the surroundings and become COOLER
anything COOLER than room temperature will GAIN ENERGY from the surroundings and WARM UP
3
Q
Conduction
A
Process of transferring thermal energy through SOLID materials
- Metals are very good thermal conductors because they have free electrons
- The electrons gain thermal energy and vibrate more
- They move through the metal (or object) and collide with other atoms , causing them to vibrate more.
- The energy is quickly spread through the metal.
4
Q
Thermal insulators
A
Bad thermal conductor = insulator
Air is a very good insulator
Woolly clothes keep us warm as they trap pockets of air
Air prevents heat loss by conduction
