Heat transfer, waves, astronomy Flashcards
What is the speed of light?
300,000 km/s (3 x 10^8 m/s)
Abiogenesis is the theory that…
life on earth formed from inanimate substances
Panspermia is the theory that…
life developed from simple cells that arrived from space - life may have arrived from somewhere else where it had already evolved travelling on asteroids
What is a series circuit?
A circuit with only one path for current flow
What is a parallel circuit?
A circuit with multiple paths, or branches, for current flow
Define convection
Convection is the transfer of heat from one part of fluid to another by the upward flow of warmer particles
Define conduction
Conduction is the method of heat transfer between two areas by direct contact - heat flows from hotter temperature to cooler temperature
Where does conduction mostly occur?
In solids
Define radiation
Thermal energy travelling in electromagnetic waves - infrared radiation
What are the three heat transfer methods?
Conduction
Convection
Radiation
What is the doppler effect?
An effect where sound changes pitch
(Doppler effect) What happens to the sound when the source is coming towards you?
The sound waves are compressed producing a higher pitch
(Doppler effect) What happens to the sound if the source is moving away from you?
As it moves away, the sound waves become stretched making a lower pitch
What colour is high visible light frequency?
Red
What colour is low visible light frequency?
Blue
