Heat Transfer Vocabulary Flashcards
Law of conservation and energy
Energy can not be created or destroyed just transformed (under normal conditions.)
Heat
Thermal energy that flows due to a difference in temperature. Heat flows from hot to cold.
Heat transfer
A method by which heat flows (conduction, convection, and radiation.)
Conduction
Heat transfer within or between solid objects.
Convection
Heat transfer in or out of fluids.
Radiation
Heat transfer due to packets of energy called photons that can travel through many substances, even empty space.
Insulator
A material through which energy (electrical, thermal, or sound) cannot be easily transferred.
Conductor
A material through which energy (electrical, thermal, or sound) can be easily transferred.
Temperature
The measure of the average speed of all particles.
Thermal energy
The total energy of all partials in an object.
