Heat Transfer Flashcards
What is radiation?
The direct transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves is called radiation.
Most of the energy from the sun reaches in what form?
The form of visible light in infrared radiation in a small amount of radiation. Visible light is a mixture of the colors that you see in the rainbow red orange yellow green blue and violet
What is infrared radiation?
It is a form of energy with wavelength that are longer then red light. It is not visible bit can be felt as heat.
What is ultraviolet radiation?
The sun also gives ultraviolet radiation which has wavelengths that are shorter than violet light. Sunburns are caused by ultraviolet radiation can also cause skin cancer and eye damage.
Do some of the suns rays reflect?
Yes cloud to manage their act like mirrors reflecting some solar energy back into space in addition dust particles molecules of gas is in the atmosphere reflect light from all directions.
What is scattering?
Reflections of light in all directions.
What happens when earths surface gets heated?
It radiates to move energy back into the atmosphere as infrared radiation.
What is the green house effect?
The process by which gases hold heat in the air.
What is thermal energy?
The total energy of motion in the molecules of a substance.
What is temperature?
It is the average amount of energy of motion of each molecule of a substance.
What is air temperature measured with?
A thermometer.
What is a thermometer?
A thermometer is a thin glass tube with a bulb on one end that contains a liquid usually mercury or a colored alcohol.
What is heat?
Heat is transferred in three ways radiation conduction and convection.
What is radiation?
The direct transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves. For example The warm sun rays on your face.
What is conduction?
The direct transfer of heat from one substance to another substance that is touching. For example touching a hot curling iron.
