Heat Transfer Flashcards
What is the unit for density?
Kg/m3 g/cm3
What is temperature?
The measure of the random kinetic energy of the particles within an object
What is conduction?
When heat is transferred when particles collide
What does conduction happen in?
Solids
Give an explanation of conduction (5)
When a metal is heated at one end, the free electrons at the hot end gain kinetic energy and move faster. These electrons diffuse and collide with the other free electrons and ions in the cooler part of the metal. As a result, they transfer energy/heat to these electrons and ions.
Where does convection occur?
Fluids (liquids and gases)
What is convection?
Occurs when particles with alot of heat energy in a liquid or gas move and take the place of particles with less heat energy
